What "Category 3" Water Means — and Why Sewage Cleanup Is Different

Category 3 is the most contaminated water class — sewage, toilet backups, floodwater. Here's what that label changes about how the cleanup actually works.

Category 3 water — also called "black water" — is grossly contaminated water carrying bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens that pose a real health risk. It comes from sewage backups, toilet overflow beyond the trap, and rising flood or ground surface water. What is Category 3 water, exactly?

Category 3 is the most contaminated of the three water categories used industry-wide under the IICRC S500 standard — the rulebook adjusters and restoration crews both work from. The other two:

  • Category 1 — clean water. A burst supply line or failed water heater. No immediate health risk.
  • Category 2 — gray water. Washing machine discharge, a failed sump pump, or a toilet overflow of relatively clean water. Contaminated enough to cause illness, but not sewage.
  • Category 3 — black water. Sewage, toilet backups from beyond the trap, and rising river, ground, or flood water. Grossly contaminated.

Where does Category 3 water actually come from in Utah homes?

Why can't you just clean up sewage like a regular spill?

Because sewage doesn't sit on top of what it touches — it contaminates it. Category 3 water carries bacteria like E. coli, along with viruses and parasites, and porous materials absorb that contamination the same way they'd absorb clean water. Carpet, carpet pad, upholstery, drywall, and insulation that soak up sewage can't be disinfected back to a safe condition. They have to be removed and disposed of.

That single fact — remove instead of clean — is what separates Category 3 cleanup from every other water loss:

  • Containment goes up first. Poly sheeting and negative air pressure keep contamination from spreading to unaffected rooms while work is underway.
