Tracing a Bathroom Leak Across Two Levels

A plumbing failure in a Bluffdale bathroom did not stay in the bathroom. Water moved laterally into an adjacent closet, then down into the ceiling assembly of the room below.
That path is the whole story of this job. Each place water stops is a separate decision about whether the material there can be dried or has to come out, and saturated batt insulation inside a ceiling cavity is firmly in the second category — it holds water against framing and does not release it usefully under airflow. So the closet carpet and pad came out, wall base came off and cavities were opened, and ceiling drywall was removed below to reach the wet insulation and pull it.
Removal rather than drying in place was the right call for the affected materials here, and framing was read at follow-up to confirm the structure behind them was drying.
What the work involved
- Affected carpet and pad removed from the closet
- Wall base removed and wall cavities opened
- Ceiling drywall removed in the room below to expose joists and reach saturated insulation
- Wet insulation removed
- Air movers set for structural drying, with moisture readings taken on closet framing at follow-up
Result
Water that had travelled across two levels was fully traced, and the affected materials were removed rather than dried in place.
